January 17, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
Nate Hendley is a Toronto-based freelance writer/reporter. He has been working as a journalist since the early 1990s. His publishing credits include The National Post, The Globe and Mail, Marketing magazine, The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Journal, and PROFIT magazine’s e-newsletter. He is also the author of 10 books, primarily true crime books. His latest book is called “Motivation for Non-Fiction Writers.”

Nate’s presentation will offer tips for new and novice writers alike.


February 21, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
Kulsum Merchant
has worked in the Canadian book publishing industry for
five years, primarily in the independent literary publishing community, first at
ECW Press in Toronto and currently at the Literary Press Group of Canada in Toronto. Prior to this, she worked in the advertising and film industries in Canada and Bombay, India.

Kulsum will discuss “The Changing Face of Book Publicity”.


March 21, 2009
- Breakfast Meeting
Ben Mazzotta is an executive producer, cinematographer, writer and editor. His films credits include the award winning films “Use Once and Destroy,” “DiverseCity, a commissioned piece for OMNI Television and “The Limits,” which won two best film awards, the ReelWorld Film Fest in Toronto and The Digital Video Film Fest in L.A. He also works as a creative consultant and freelance illustrator/animator for clients such as Teletoon, and several companies, ad agencies, and production companies.

Ben’s presentation is on “Writing for the Independent Market”.


April 18, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
Paul Lima has worked as a writer and trainer for over 25 years. He writes business and promotional copy for corporate clients, and has written articles for the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, National Post, CBC.ca, and other periodicals. Paul conducts workshops on the business writing and the business of freelance writing, and has written 8 books and 3 e-reports on the business of freelance writing and business writing. His latest book is "How to Write a Non-Fiction Book in 60 Days". Paul also maintains a widely read blog about the freelance writing business.

Paul’s topic at the meeting will be “How to Write a Non-Fiction Book in 60 Days”.


May 16, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
Robert Morgan is Publisher with BookLand Press. Robert will discuss “Publishing Tips for Authors from the Publisher's Perspective”. The presentation will cover query letters, selecting the right publisher for your book, publishing contracts, the editorial process, dealing with agents, self-publishing, and book marketing and distribution.


June 20, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
As a freelancer, Fraser Sutherland has edited more than 25 published books, and a vast amount of printed and online material. In a past life, he was editor and co-founder of the literary magazine Northern Journey, a columnist for the book-publishing trade magazine Quill & Quire, and Managing Editor of Books in Canada. Wearing one of his other hats, he has published 13 books of his own: eight of poetry, four of non-fiction and one of short fiction.

Fraser’s topic at the meeting will be "Who Needs an Editor?"


July 19, 2009 - Breakfast Meeting
This is our last meeting before the summer break. It’s an opportunity for WEN members to read their short stories, poems or creative non-fiction. To book a 5-minute spot, members should contact Marie Maksymiw at m_maksymiw@sympatico.ca.
